This is the Bushman First Flush Water Diverter Kit - 3 Inch Round. Downspout First Flush Water Diverters improve water quality and reduce tank/cistern maintenance by preventing the first flush of water from entering your rainwater tank. First Flush Diverters help ensure cleaner water is available for use, which protects rainwater pumps, water filters and internal household appliances (if whole home system) such as washing machines and toilets. If you think about how much time goes by in between rains, your roof will get dirty with dirt, pollen, bird and squirrel droppings, etc. First Flush Diverters, such as the 3" and 4" kits, are installed at each downspout that supplies water to the tank/cistern. These utilizes a ball and seat system - a simple automatic system that does not rely on mechanical parts or manual intervention. As the water level rises in the diverter chamber, the ball floats, and once the chamber is full, the ball rests on a seat inside the diverter chamber preventing any further water from entering the diverter. The subsequent flow of water is then automatically directed along the pipe system to the tank/cistern.

NOTE: THIS ITEM IS ONLY AVAILABLE WHEN YOU ALSO PURCHASE A TANK.

How do they work?

Fitting an appropriately sized First Flush Water Diverter is critical to achieve good quality water. Water Diverters improve water quality, reduce tank/cistern maintenance and protect pumps by preventing the first flush of water, which may contain contaminants from the roof, from entering the tank/cistern.

When it rains, water slowly builds up in the roof guttering system before it exits through the downspout. The first flush of water from the roof can contain amounts of bacteria from decomposed insects, skinks, bird and animal droppings and concentrated tannic acid. It may also contain sediments, water borne heavy metals and chemical residues, all of which are undesirable elements to have in a water storage system.

Instead of flowing to the water tank/cistern, these pollutants are diverted with the initial flow of water into the chamber of the water diverter. The water diverters from Rain Harvesting utilize a dependable ball and seat system - a simple automatic system that does not rely on mechanical parts or manual intervention.

As the water level rises in the diverter chamber the ball floats, and once the chamber is full, the ball rests on a seat inside the diverter chamber preventing any further water entering the diverter. The subsequent flow of water is then automatically directed along the pipe system to the tank/cistern.

For a water diverter to work effectively, the contaminated water in the chamber must be sealed off. This prevents the water passing to the storage tank/cistern and ensure the water does not "syphon" off the contaminated water in the chamber. The simplest and surest way to do this is with a floating ball and seat. A slow release valve ensures the chamber empties itself after rain and resets automatically. The diverted water need not be wasted water because the drain pipe from the diverter chamber can be fitted to a standard drip irrigation system.

How much water should you divert?

It is important to prevent heavy sediments and other roof pollutants from entering the rainwater tank/cistern. The amount of water diverted should be a minimum of 12.5 gallons per 1000 square feet of roof area (or 0.0125 gallons per square foot). In calculating the amount of water to divert, consideration can be given to (1) the surface area of the roof, and (2) the amount of pollutants on the roof and gutters.

The following factors can be used as a guide in determining the volume of water to be diverted:

Pollution Factor For The Roof
- Minimal Pollution - Divert 0.0125 gallons per square foot of roof area (For example, open field, no trees, no bird droppings, clean environment).
- Substantial Pollution - Divert 0.05 gallons per square foot of roof area (For example, Leaves and debris, bird droppings, various animal matter, dead insects, skinks, etc.)

Diversion Volume For A First Flush Water Diverter
Square Foot Roof Area x Pollution Factor = Rainwater to be divertered.
For example a minimal polluted roof of 1000 square feet: 1000 x 0.0125 = 12.5 gallons to be diverted.

Bushman Warranty Details:

Bushman Water Harvesting Corporation (dba Bushman USA) Limited Warranty BUSHMAN WATER HARVESTING CORPORATION (dba Bushman USA) (Seller) warrants its water storage tanks sold in the United States against defects in materials or workmanship for three (3) years from the date of purchase. The Limited Warranty is dependent upon installation in accordance with Seller's specifications and the use of Seller's components, accessories and designated application practices exclusively. If a defect is discovered in normal use of a tank in the manner intended, Seller will, at its sole election, repair or replace the tank. In no event will Seller's responsibility exceed the purchase price of the tank received by Seller. Additional requirements or terms of this Limited Warranty are:

1. The Limited Warranty extends to the original purchaser only and is not transferable by operation of law or otherwise.

2. The Limited Warranty is limited to the repair or replacement of the tank, at the sole discretion of Seller. Seller is not liable for any damage to property or any other associated costs that may occur when repair or replacement of the tank is carried out. Repair work is undertaken at ground level, so tanks that are located on stands must be brought down to ground level before Seller can commence repair work.

Note that expenses such as landscaping, plumbing, electrical, costs of lifting equipment and hire of additional labor are at purchaser's expense. Bringing tanks down from stands for repair work is also at the purchaser's expense.

3. The Limited Warranty does not apply to the tank color, which may in time fade or change.

4. The Limited Warranty applies to the one piece polyethylene structure of the tank and does not extend to fittings such as the strainer, outlet, valve, tap, overflow or any other fittings, accessories or ancillary components. Some fittings, accessories and ancillary components are covered under a separate limited warranty program, which is available upon request.

5. The Limited Warranty on water tanks is for the storage of water only, at a water temperature not exceeding 73F/23C. The Limited Warranty does not apply to tank damage due to freezing.

6. The Limited Warranty on water tanks is for storage of water on the site only. Transporting water in water tanks voids the Limited Warranty.

7. The Limited Warranty is void and will not be binding upon Seller in the event of damage to unsecured tanks through blowing away, or by abuse, improper installation, unsound base, or unauthorized modifications to the tank.

Note that all installation instructions must be followed and in particular the fitting of flexible hoses.

8. Seller must be notified of any defect or fault (using a Seller-approved claim form) within seven (7) days of it occurring. Seller must be given the opportunity to inspect the tank within thirty (30) days of such notification, otherwise the Limited Warranty is void.

9.
